Overview

• Sergeant Shiou Deng, a 26-year LAPD veteran, was struck by a passing vehicle after exiting his patrol car to help with a multi-vehicle crash around 2 a.m. Monday on the southbound 405 near Getty Center Drive.
• The initial collision involved a Toyota pickup and other vehicles, resulting in one fatality at the scene and two people injured.
• All lanes of the 405 Freeway were shut down in both directions for hours before CHP crews cleared the wreckage and reopened the roadway by midday.
• Mayor Karen Bass and Governor Gavin Newsom each ordered flags at city and state buildings to be flown at half-staff in tribute to Deng’s service.
• The LAPD and CHP continue to investigate the sequence of events leading to Deng’s death and have pledged support for his family and colleagues.
