Overview
- Rescue teams report at least eight dead after multiple landslides hit Mon district, with four bodies recovered and four others still believed buried beneath debris.
- Twelve people have been reported injured and around 15 houses in Defence Colony were severely damaged by the slides.
- NDRF, SDRF, Assam Rifles, the Army, Nagaland Police, district officials and local volunteers are conducting search and rescue operations that have been slowed by unstable ground and ongoing heavy rain.
- Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio announced immediate ex gratia payments of Rs 4 lakh for next of kin of the deceased and Rs 74,000 for each injured person and pledged state relief and shelter for affected families.
- The India Meteorological Department has forecast more heavy rain across the Northeast, raising the risk of further landslides, delaying full damage assessments and threatening road clearance and relief work in other districts such as Mokokchung.
