Landslide Partially Blocks NH-520 in Odisha

A Bay of Bengal low-pressure system risks prolonging heavy rain, forcing more road and service disruptions.

Overview

  • Heavy rain from the Bay of Bengal low pressure caused a landslide at Barabanka Ghat that left one side of National Highway‑520 partly blocked and traffic restricted to a single lane.
  • Local police and National Highways Authority of India teams are managing traffic and clearing debris at the site while urging caution for drivers between Barbil and Rajamunda.
  • Incessant rain has flooded large areas of Nabarangpur and Malkangiri, disrupting roads, bridges and water supplies and producing 315.8 mm of rain in Malkangiri in 24 hours.
  • The India Meteorological Department has issued orange alerts for six districts through August 29 and warned a possible new low-pressure area around August 31–September 1 that could trigger another spell of heavy rain.
  • District administrations say they are taking precautionary and relief measures as Odisha has received about 1,078 mm of rain so far this monsoon, roughly 29% above normal, increasing the risk of more landslides and flash flooding.
