Landslide Destroys Norway’s E6 at Levanger, Worker Presumed Dead

Authorities are probing whether quick-clay or stabilization work triggered the collapse.

Overview

  • The Saturday morning slide at Nesvatnet in Levanger ripped away both lanes of the E6 and left parts of the parallel Nordland railway hanging over the lake.
  • Police report the identified missing person, a Danish worker on the site, is presumed dead as a large search continues with helicopters, boats, dogs and divers.
  • Another driver whose car was swept into the water managed to jump into a boat on his trailer and was taken to hospital.
  • The highway and the affected rail segment are closed for several days, nearby homes were evacuated, and freight traffic faces long detours that include routes through Sweden.
  • Bane NOR confirms stabilization works were underway and says the area’s quick-clay risk was known, while residents say they had long warned about unstable ground.
