Lancaster Murder Suspect Surrenders in Peru, Held Pending U.S. Extradition

Extradition proceedings will now move forward in Peru under an Interpol Red Notice, with a months-long timeline expected.

  • Peru’s national police say Jossimar Cabrera Cornejo, 36, turned himself in at Interpol Lima and is being held in preventive detention.
  • He is charged in Los Angeles County with murdering his wife, Sheylla Cabrera, 33, with prosecutors alleging he used a knife as a deadly weapon.
  • The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department says extradition to the United States is expected to take several months and he will remain in Peruvian custody during the process.
  • Search teams found Sheylla Cabrera’s remains on Aug. 16 in Angeles National Forest wrapped in material resembling what appeared in surveillance video of her husband dragging a large object.
  • The couple’s three children were found safe in Peru on Aug. 16 and have since been repatriated to Los Angeles to be with their mother’s family.
