• Preston Malone III, 15, reported feeling ill during junior varsity conditioning Monday and died Wednesday at Children’s Medical Center in Dallas, the district confirmed.
• Athletic trainers placed him in a cold tub, called 911, and he was transported for evaluation after initially showing improvement and speaking with staff.
• The district said staff followed UIL and local heat-safety protocols, including adjusted practice times, hydration measures, and certified trainers on site.
• Officials said Monday’s workout was moved indoors near 90 degrees in a ventilated but non–air-conditioned facility cooled by open doors and large fans, consistent with a policy to go inside above 89 degrees.
• Family members said on social media he suffered heat stroke and later a heart attack, while the district has not announced autopsy results or a definitive medical cause; practices and a Thursday scrimmage were canceled and grief counselors were made available.
