Overview

  • Preston Malone III, a junior varsity sophomore, died Wednesday at Children’s Medical Center two days after falling ill during conditioning drills.
  • During Monday’s practice he reported feeling unwell, trainers called 911, and he was placed in a cold tub after a reported 104°F temperature that dropped to 102°F by EMS arrival.
  • He was transported for evaluation and remained conscious and talking, but his condition worsened overnight and he later died at the hospital.
  • Lancaster ISD says staff followed UIL heat-safety procedures, noting Monday’s session was moved indoors near 90°F in a non-air-conditioned facility cooled by open doors and large fans.
  • The district canceled practices for the week and a Thursday scrimmage and deployed grief counselors, while a family video described the incident as heat stroke followed by a heart attack.
