Overview

• Twenty visitors—including twelve children and six adults—were struck by lightning around 5 p.m. Tuesday at the Dreher Shoals Dam beach.
• All victims suffered non-life-threatening injuries and are receiving treatment at local hospitals.
• The strike was caused by a random storm cloud passing over on an otherwise sunny, hot day.
• Lexington County Fire Service, Irmo Fire District, emergency medical services and the sheriff’s department responded within minutes.
• Dominion Energy–owned Lake Murray Public Park was closed Tuesday night and reopened Wednesday after a safety inspection.
