Lake-Effect Snowstorm Slams Central New York, Spawns Dozens of Crashes

Onondaga County has a travel advisory in place with a winter storm warning set to expire at 7 a.m. Wednesday.

Overview

  • Heavy snow and high winds are creating whiteout conditions that are degrading visibility and road safety across the region.
  • The Onondaga County 911 Center reported more than two dozen crashes, vehicles off the road and disabled cars during the morning commute.
  • An overturned tractor-trailer shut all lanes on the I-81 northbound ramp to Exit 7 in Salina before reopening around 7:48 a.m.
  • Other disruptions included a four-hour closure of the eastbound I-690 ramp near Thompson Road in DeWitt and a multi-vehicle crash near I-81 Exit 16A that was cleared before 6 a.m.
  • Local government operations were suspended as Syracuse city and Onondaga County offices and courts closed, and forecasters warned that localized snowfall could reach two to three feet.
