Lake District Strengthens Multi-Agency Patrols to Curb Fly-Camping

Expanded evening patrols, a Glenridding engagement day, a bid to extend PSPOs all reflect authorities’ drive to curb environmental damage from illegal camping

Overview

  • Cumbria Police, National Trust and Lake District National Park Authority rangers have stepped up joint patrols at known hotspots, running later into the day and night to deter unauthorized camping.
  • During August operations, rangers engaged roughly 40 campers to promote leave-no-trace practices and urge visitors to take all litter home.
  • On August 9, a community engagement day in Glenridding brought residents together with police, fire service and park authorities to share concerns and advice on responsible visiting.
  • Authorities are pursuing an extension of the Westmorland and Furness Council Public Space Protection Order to empower stricter fines and legal deterrents against fly-camping violations.
  • The Strategic Visitor Management Group will reconvene on August 21 to assess patrol outcomes and plan further conservation and enforcement measures.
