Lake County Coroner: Great Lakes Navy Recruit Died by Self-Inflicted Gunshot

The Navy has enlisted the Naval Criminal Investigative Service and the Lake County coroner’s office to determine what led to the sailor’s death.

Overview

  • Preliminary autopsy results released Friday show recruit Kayshawn Wickerson, 18, died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.
  • Naval Station Great Lakes police and fire personnel responded to reports of a gunshot victim on a firing range around 1:45 p.m. Wednesday.
  • Wickerson, stationed at Recruit Training Command, was pronounced dead at the scene and identified as an Ocala, Florida native.
