Lake Constance Survey Reveals 31 Previously Unknown Wrecks

Advanced sonar mapping supported by ROV dives has cataloged these time capsules in situ in preparation for staged publications through 2027.

Overview

  • Since 2022 researchers flagged more than 250 anomalies on the lake floor, investigated 186 sites and confirmed 31 wrecks of cultural-historical significance.
  • One site yielded an almost intact 19th-century cargo sailing ship with mast and yards still preserved at depth.
  • A widely scattered debris field of at least 17 wooden barrels was documented, though no associated transporting vessel has been identified.
  • Two larger metal hulls have been tentatively linked by dimensions and location to the paddle steamers SD Baden and SD Friedrichshafen II.
  • Authorities have ruled out salvage operations for cost and conservation reasons and will release further findings in phases through 2027.
