LaChanze Seeks Royalties for 'The Color Purple' Movie Song

The Broadway star claims she contributed to the lyrics of 'I'M HERE' in the new film adaptation.

LaChanze, the actress who played Celie Harris Johnson in the 2005 Broadway adaptation of The Color Purple, has publicly asked for royalties for the lyrics she added to the song 'I'M HERE' in the new movie musical produced by Oprah Winfrey and Steven Spielberg.
LaChanze is not officially credited on the song; composers Brenda Russell, Allee Willis and Stephen Bray are.
She said as they workshopped the song, the composers asked her to describe what she was feeling as the character, and her feelings and emotions were put into the song.
The new film adaptation of The Color Purple has been a success, earning an estimated $18.15M on its first day, an A CinemaScore, 5 stars and 92% positive.
It is unclear what royalties LaChanze would be due given her contribution to the song.
