Labor Day 2025: What’s Closed and What’s Open on Monday, Sept. 1

Federal rules do not require extra holiday pay for private workers.

Overview

  • Federal, state and many local offices will be closed Monday, with libraries, DMVs and the U.S. Postal Service pausing service for the federal holiday.
  • Banks and U.S. stock markets will observe the holiday, so in-branch services halt while ATMs and mobile banking remain available.
  • Costco will close all warehouses nationwide, but most major retailers, grocers and restaurant chains plan to open, often on limited or modified hours.
  • Private carriers such as FedEx will not run normal delivery, and some UPS operations may be limited or offer only select services.
  • Most federal civilian employees receive paid time off under OPM guidance, while overtime under the FLSA applies only when weekly hours exceed 40, and retailers advertise seasonal sales concentrated in home goods and appliances.
