L.A. Zoo Announces First Chimp Births in 11 Years, Two Healthy Baby Girls

The births support the AZA Species Survival Plan for a species listed as endangered by the IUCN.

Overview

  • The infants were born on Aug. 20 to 35-year-old Yoshi and on Sept. 9 to 18-year-old first-time mother Vindi, with 26-year-old Pu’iwa identified as sire of the first baby.
  • Caregivers report both newborns are female, remain unnamed, and are bonding well with their mothers.
  • The mothers and infants are currently in the Chimp Penhouse above the habitat, where viewing is possible but limited.
  • Zoo staff said they aim to transition the pairs to the main exhibit as early as next week, subject to animal readiness.
  • Yoshi is an experienced mother on her third offspring, and the additions strengthen a multi-male, mixed-age troop that mirrors wild social structure.
