L.A. Teen Identified in Fatal 75-Foot Fall at Crockett Sideshow as County Weighs Deterrents

The CHP is still investigating and is asking witnesses to contact its Contra Costa office.

Overview

  • Authorities identified the victim as 16-year-old Jose Cuevas of Harbor City, who died early Sept. 13 while watching an illegal sideshow in Crockett.
  • The CHP says he climbed over a concrete barrier on the Pomona Street on-ramp to I-80 and accidentally fell about 75 feet, where he was pronounced dead at the scene.
  • Officers had responded around 3:30 a.m. to a takeover involving more than 100 vehicles blocking Pomona and Merchant streets near the Carquinez Bridge, with drone video showing cars performing donuts.
  • Contra Costa County Supervisor Shanelle Scales-Preston called for a roundtable with CHP, Caltrans, the sheriff, the DA and Public Works and proposed cameras, license-plate readers and physical roadway changes.
  • Officials and residents say sideshows have been a recurring safety issue at the Crockett on- and off-ramps, with a prior serious fall reported at the same location.
