Overview
- Judge Martha Patricia Rodríguez Salinas of the Tamaulipas Superior Court absolved Sofía del Carmen Monsiváis Treviño under case CP0004/2018, ordering her immediate release on August 7, 2025.
- Monsiváis Treviño had faced charges of association delictuosa, crimes against public servants and homicide calificado, including accusations she organized a May 2019 attack on guards at Cefereso 16 that left five custodians dead.
- The court found the prosecution failed to present sufficient evidence to prove her responsibility for the alleged crimes.
- Held since January 2018 at the federal prison in Morelos, she is the niece of ex-Zetas leaders Miguel Ángel Treviño Morales (“Z-40”) and Óscar Omar Treviño Morales (“Z-42”) and was identified as a plaza jefe for the Cartel del Noreste in Nuevo Laredo.
- Federal and Tamaulipas authorities have issued no statements on further investigations into her activities, even as U.S. Treasury sanctions on the Cartel del Noreste remain in effect.
