LA Deputy Fatally Shoots Woman Who Called 911 for Help

Niani Finlayson was shot in her home during a domestic dispute, sparking a $30 million claim against the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department.

Niani Finlayson, a 27-year-old Black woman, was fatally shot by Deputy Ty Shelton of the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department (LASD) on December 4, 2023, in her Lancaster home.
Finlayson had called 911 for help during a domestic dispute with her ex-boyfriend, who she claimed would not leave her home.
Bodycam footage shows Finlayson holding a knife and threatening to stab her ex-boyfriend, who she claimed had hurt her 9-year-old daughter, Xaisha.
Shelton shot Finlayson four times within seconds of entering her home, in front of her daughter.
Finlayson's family has filed a claim against LASD and LA county, seeking $30 million in damages.
