L.A. County Deputy Convicted of Excessive Force in Supermarket Arrest

Trevor James Kirk faces up to 10 years in prison for assaulting a woman during a 2023 incident captured on video.

Deputy Trevor James Kirk, 32, was found guilty of one felony count of deprivation of rights under color of law for his actions during a June 2023 arrest in Lancaster, California.
The incident occurred when Kirk violently threw a woman, identified in court as J.H., to the ground and pepper-sprayed her while she was recording deputies detaining a man outside a WinCo Foods supermarket.
Body camera and bystander footage showed Kirk escalating the situation without giving verbal commands, misleadingly reporting a 'fight' over his radio, and threatening to punch the woman while pinning her to the ground.
The woman sustained blunt-force head trauma and injuries to her head, arms, and wrist, and required medical attention following the assault.
Kirk, who has been relieved of duty without pay, will be sentenced on April 21 and faces a maximum of 10 years in federal prison.
