L.A. County Deputy Convicted of Excessive Force in Supermarket Arrest

Trevor James Kirk faces up to 10 years in prison for assaulting a woman during a 2023 incident captured on video.

  • Deputy Trevor James Kirk, 32, was found guilty of one felony count of deprivation of rights under color of law for his actions during a June 2023 arrest in Lancaster, California.
  • The incident occurred when Kirk violently threw a woman, identified in court as J.H., to the ground and pepper-sprayed her while she was recording deputies detaining a man outside a WinCo Foods supermarket.
  • Body camera and bystander footage showed Kirk escalating the situation without giving verbal commands, misleadingly reporting a 'fight' over his radio, and threatening to punch the woman while pinning her to the ground.
  • The woman sustained blunt-force head trauma and injuries to her head, arms, and wrist, and required medical attention following the assault.
  • Kirk, who has been relieved of duty without pay, will be sentenced on April 21 and faces a maximum of 10 years in federal prison.
