La Capital Marks 158 Years With Rosario Tribute to Founder

The commemoration spotlights the paper’s origins as a platform created to advance Rosario’s bid to become Argentina’s capital.

Overview

  • Residents, descendants and civic groups gathered Saturday at the Ovidio Lagos statue in Rosario to honor the founder with floral offerings and brief speeches.
  • The tribute was promoted by Volver a Rosario, with attendees including Mónica Lagos, Cristina Lagos and Gustavo Fiorito Lagos, and remarks by Miguel Culaciati; former employee Alejandro Palacios also took part.
  • La Capital was founded on November 15, 1867 by Ovidio Lagos with Eudoro Carrasco and financing linked to Justo José de Urquiza to champion Rosario as the national capital.
  • Its first issue comprised four pages with an initial run of 200 copies from a print shop on what is now San Martín Street, before a landmark 1889 move to Sarmiento 763 and the installation of a Marinoni press.
  • Recognized as Argentina’s oldest continuously operating newspaper, the daily evolved with a 1967 shift to news-led front pages, adopted photocomposition in 1978 and launched its website on November 16, 2000.
