Overview

  • Russian climber Natalia Nagovitsyna, 47, fractured her leg near the summit of Pobeda Peak on August 12 and became stranded.
  • Drone footage on August 19 showed her alive, but by Thursday there were no signs of life and her shelter appeared torn in temperatures near −23C.
  • Italian climber Luca Sinigaglia, 49, died on August 15 during a second attempt to deliver supplies; his body was recovered from an ice cave around 7,000 metres.
  • A military Mi-8 helicopter crash-landed on August 16, injuring four rescuers, and a subsequent Mi-17VM sortie was forced back by zero visibility.
  • The Kyrgyzstan Ministry of Emergency Situations confirmed the organised mission was called off, as experts warned a successful extraction was almost impossible.
