Kyoto’s Tōrin-in Unveils Candlelit Zen Garden Ahead of Nighttime Viewing

The installation renders the Zen phrase “Shōrō Un Jikan” in candlelight, inviting quiet contemplation.

Overview

  • Tōrin-in in Kyoto’s Ukyo Ward held a test lighting on October 16 for its nighttime special viewing, Bon-tō no Akari ni Shitashimu Kai.
  • The display uses roof tiles and candles to softly illuminate a dry landscape garden without mechanical lighting, with about 800 candles arranged across the grounds.
  • This year’s theme expresses the phrase “松老雲自閑,” with andon lanterns showing “松” and “老” and rows of candles forming “雲,” “自,” and “閑.”
  • Public viewing runs October 17–26 from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., with last entry at 8:30 p.m. and an admission fee of ¥700.
  • Abbot Genbo Nishikawa, 86, encouraged visitors to sit quietly and experience a restful moment in the candlelight.
