Kyoto Hotel Fire Linked to Charging Mobile Battery

The case adds to a run of device-related fires under scrutiny across trains, homes, hotels.

Overview

  • An emergency call at about 1:40 a.m. on Oct. 6 reported flames from a second-floor room at a hotel in Kyoto’s Minami Ward near JR Kyoto Station.
  • The Kyoto City Fire Department said a mobile battery and part of a desk burned inside the room of a ten-story building.
  • Officials believe the blaze originated from a battery that was being charged.
  • No injuries were reported, and guests temporarily evacuated outside.
  • The incident follows an Oct. 4 Osaka Metro train fire attributed to a passenger’s mobile battery that injured two and a late-September Tokyo apartment blaze that sent multiple people to hospital.
