Shinji Aoba, the man convicted for the 2019 arson attack on Kyoto Animation studio that killed 36 people, has appealed against his death sentence.
Aoba's defense team had entered a plea of not guilty, citing his mental disorder, but the judge rejected this.
Aoba believed that Kyoto Animation, known among fans as KyoAni, had stolen his ideas, a claim the company has denied.
Many of those killed in the fire were young, including a 21-year-old woman, and more than 30 others were injured.
Aoba himself sustained burns on 90% of his body and only regained consciousness weeks after the fire.
