Kulgam Operation Enters 10th Day as New Gunfight Erupts in Kishtwar

Security forces are tightening their cordon around suspected Pakistani militants in forested hideouts using attack drones, helicopters, para commandos.

Overview

  • Operation Akhal in Kulgam district has stretched into its tenth day, becoming one of the longest-running anti-terror offensives in the Kashmir Valley.
  • The Kulgam gunfight has claimed the lives of Lance Naik Pritpal Singh and Sepoy Harminder Singh and left ten soldiers wounded after more than 200 hours of sustained combat.
  • On August 10, the Army’s White Knight Corps engaged two to three suspected Pakistani terrorists in a fresh encounter in Kishtwar’s Dul area after establishing contact during an intelligence-driven search.
  • Hundreds of personnel from the Indian Army, CRPF, Jammu and Kashmir Police and Special Operations Group have coordinated cordon-and-search missions supported by drones, Rudra helicopters and elite para commandos.
  • These simultaneous operations follow earlier campaigns—Operation Mahadev and Operation Shiv Shakti—aimed at dismantling cross-border infiltration networks across Jammu and Kashmir’s rugged terrain.
