Kuki-Zo Leaders Set Terms for Joining Manipur Government, Seek Time-Bound Pledge on UT Status

Their conditions put a decisive hurdle before efforts to end President’s Rule.

Overview

  • At a Guwahati meeting, Kuki-Zo MLAs, insurgent groups under SoO, and the Kuki-Zo Council adopted a five-point resolution reiterating a Union Territory with a legislature and land safeguards.
  • They said they will participate in a restored government only after written commitments from the Centre and state, to be executed within the current Assembly’s tenure ending in 2027.
  • Absent such assurances, the groups resolved to refrain from any role in forming an elected government and insisted the settlement be finalized before the next state election.
  • A mass rally themed “Expedite Our Political Solution” is scheduled across Kuki-Zo districts on January 14, with local organizers urging closures in solidarity.
  • The stance comes as 10 Kuki-Zo MLAs, including seven from the BJP, are pivotal to government formation in a state under President’s Rule since February 13, 2025, after conflict that left about 250 dead and nearly 60,000 displaced.
