KT Launches Free SIM Replacement for All Customers, Opens CEO Search

The carrier seeks to rebuild trust after femtocell-enabled payment fraud by initiating a nationwide SIM swap alongside an externally run leadership transition.

Overview

  • Free replacements begin at 9 a.m. on Nov. 5, with applications accepted via KT’s website or hotline and pickup at KT service centers.
  • The rollout starts in Gwangmyeong and Geumcheon before expanding nationwide, with MVNO subscribers on KT’s network eligible and a self-activation delivery option available from Nov. 11.
  • KT says the action follows August breaches tied to illegal micro base stations, with 368 users incurring losses of 240 million won and about 22,200 user records linked to the rogue equipment.
  • Potentially exposed data include IMSI and IMEI identifiers and phone numbers, and KT reports no evidence of widespread core-network server leaks for most users.
  • CEO Kim Young-shub will complete his term ending March 2026 without seeking reappointment as an outside-director committee opens CEO applications Nov. 5–16, aiming to name a finalist by late December pending shareholder approval.
