Kronk Gym Reopens in Detroit at Brewster Wheeler Recreation Center

New leadership pledges a community-first revival that honors Emanuel Steward’s legacy.

Overview

  • Kronk officially reopened Dec. 10 in a 3,500-square-foot space at 670 Wilkins St. inside the restored Brewster Wheeler Recreation Center, a 1929 facility now being rehabilitated by MHT Housing with a nearby 211-unit affordable development underway.
  • The gym operates under new ownership led by CEO Paul Bhatti with COO John Lepak, with continued involvement from Marie Steward, Sylvia Steward-Williams, and original champion Hilmer Kenty.
  • Training is open to all levels with weekday fitness from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. and boxing from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., plus Saturday hours, spanning youth, amateur, elite amateur, and professional development.
  • Trainers include Kronk alum and 2025 Hall of Famer Mary Jo Sanders alongside veteran Kronk coaches, reinforcing the program’s competitive pedigree.
  • The gym says it has signed two professional fighters—undefeated Hunter Lee (4-0) and Golden Gloves champion William Myhre, with Myhre expected to make his pro debut in February 2026—while also relaunching official Kronk-branded merchandise.
