Kremlin Readies New Year Displays: Tree Installed in Putin’s Office, Main Spruce to Arrive Dec. 10

RIA Novosti describes a formal nighttime procession for the century-old spruce from the Ruzsky district into Cathedral Square.

Overview

  • The office tree stands in the corner of Vladimir Putin’s working room and is decorated in red, gold, green and silver tones, according to RIA Novosti.
  • The country’s main New Year tree is scheduled to reach the Kremlin on Wednesday evening, with a 22:00 reception on Red Square before entering through the Spasskaya Tower.
  • The selected spruce is a century old, measures 26 meters in height, has a 64-centimeter trunk circumference and an 11-meter lower-branch span, and will be installed on Cathedral Square.
  • The tree was sourced from the Ruzsky municipal district after a Moscow Oblast competition that reviewed 24 candidates on shape, needle density, branch condition and appearance.
  • The spruce was felled on December 8 during a staged ceremony and is expected to remain on display until January 20 before being recycled, with seeds from its cones to be planted nationwide.
