Kremlin New Year Tree to Arrive Dec. 10, Remain on Display Until Jan. 20

A 100-year-old spruce from Ruza was selected by the Presidential Property Management Directorate to serve as Russia’s main holiday tree.

Overview

  • Officials said the tree will stand on Cathedral Square through January 20 after its ceremonial entry into the Kremlin.
  • A special road train will deliver the spruce on December 10 at 22:00 via the Spasskaya Gate following two days of packing and preparation.
  • The selected tree measures 26 meters in height with a 64-centimeter trunk circumference and an 11-meter lower-branch span.
  • A dedicated commission chose the tree based on visual appeal, size, and resilience to weather, with decoration scheduled to be completed by December 25.
  • After the season, the wood is repurposed for souvenirs and youth hockey sticks, and seeds have been collected for nurseries since 2017.
