Krefeld Signal-Box Failure Halts Regional Rail, Forcing Cancellations and Detours

The outage exposes the vulnerability of aging control systems that can stop entire nodes without a repair estimate.

Overview

  • Since about 3 a.m., a defect at the Krefeld main station signal box has made the area impassable, technicians are on site, and Deutsche Bahn cannot predict when services will resume.
  • Multiple lines are affected with diversions, partial cancellations or standstills, including RE 4, RE 7, RE 10, RE 11, RE 42, RB 33, RB 35 and RB 37.
  • Latest adjustments include RE 7 turning at Neuss with buses to bridge gaps, RE 10 running only to Kempen with buses to Neuss, RE 42 routed non-stop between Krefeld-Uerdingen and Mönchengladbach, RB 33 partially resumed with diversions, RB 35 turning at Krefeld-Linn, and RB 37 suspended.
  • Replacement buses are operating on several corridors, with operators including Haniqi Reisen and local lines 58 and 927 advised between Krefeld-Uerdingen and Krefeld main station.
  • The disruption comes as DB reports rising delays on the HamburgSylt route and pursues about €160 million in upgrades, planned electrification and electronic interlockings, 2027–2028 works without a full island closure, and awaits federal decisions on a second track.
