Overview

  • About 10 percent of Kraft Heinz’s US portfolio still relies on synthetic FD&C dyes in brands such as Kool-Aid, Jell-O, Crystal Light and Jet-Puffed marshmallows and will be fully reformulated.
  • Effective immediately, no new Kraft Heinz products launched in the US will contain artificial color additives.
  • The phase-out employs a three-pronged strategy of removing noncritical colors, replacing dyes with natural alternatives and crafting new shades when exact matches are unavailable.
  • Federal regulators led by FDA Commissioner Marty Makary and HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. plan to phase out petroleum-based synthetic dyes by the end of 2026 and have begun expediting approval of natural color additives.
  • Major competitors including PepsiCo and Tyson Foods have already committed to reducing or replacing synthetic food dyes ahead of the regulatory deadline.
