Kosovo Opens Polls for Snap Parliamentary Elections

The contest doubles as a test of coalition prospects with Serb List participation restored by a December ruling.

Overview

  • Polling stations opened Sunday for the early vote, with 2,076,290 eligible voters casting ballots at 2,614 stations across 948 centers from 07:00 to 19:00 local time, and diaspora voting underway in 29 overseas offices.
  • Twenty-four political entities, including parties, coalitions, civic initiatives and one independent candidate, are competing for 120 seats with a total of 1,180 candidates.
  • The Electoral Complaints and Appeals Panel on December 5 ordered the registration of the Serb List, and 10 of the assembly’s 120 seats are reserved for the Serb minority.
  • Serb List representatives recently returned to lead the northern municipalities of Zvečan, Zubin Potok, Leposavić and North Mitrovica following the October–November local elections.
  • Vetëvendosje led by caretaker prime minister Albin Kurti is described as the frontrunner, with PDK and LDK as main rivals, while Serbia’s leadership urges support for the Serb List and Russia’s ambassador forecasts little change for Kosovo Serbs.
