Koryo High Baseball Player Disputes Assault Claims as School Launches External Probe

A three-lawyer panel will examine the January dorm incident following an interview in which the accused questioned viral social media accounts.

Overview

  • In an Oct. 10 interview, a third-year player labeled as a perpetrator said the widely shared account was inaccurate, describing contact as two chest pokes between two people.
  • The school has said four senior players individually assaulted a then-first-year who broke a dorm rule by eating cup noodles.
  • A post by the former player's parent in late July alleged the student was surrounded by more than 10 people and struck more than 100 times, claims that spread online.
  • The interviewed player apologized to the former teammate and guardian for using physical force and has submitted a criminal complaint alleging defamation over online slander and identification.
  • Koryo withdrew from the summer Koshien tournament in August as anonymous posts proliferated, and on Oct. 10 the school announced a three-lawyer third-party committee to clarify facts and recommend prevention steps.
