Kolkata’s Green Line Completion Drives Ridership Surge, Strains Operations

Through-running on the East–West corridor has triggered a sharp jump in revenue.

Overview

  • With the EsplanadeSealdah link now open, the Green Line forms a continuous 16.6 km route from Sector V to Howrah Maidan.
  • Ridership reached nearly 1.9 lakh on Thursday and about 1.87 lakh on the first working day after opening, as earnings neared Rs 32 lakh in a day and officials projected about Rs 36 lakh, reflecting a roughly 124% revenue jump.
  • Howrah Maidan, Howrah, Sealdah and Sector V emerged as the busiest stops, with Sector V’s daily commuter count rising to nearly 45,000 and ticket sales at key stations roughly tripling from the prior week.
  • Network-wide traffic also climbed to about 7.7 lakh riders on a reported weekday, with the Blue Line carrying more than 5.6 lakh and facing complaints of overcrowding, delays and cooling issues.
  • Metro officials say steps are underway, including added trains on the Blue Line, a new TETRA communication system, a push for QR-ticketing via the AAMAR KOLKATA METRO app with on-site assistance, and a rake reversal crossover at Shahid Khudiram following the Kavi Subhash closure.
