Kolkata Starts to Dry Out After Record Deluge as City Braces for More Rain

With more showers forecast through the weekend, authorities are restoring power and drainage.

Overview

  • Most thoroughfares have cleared but low-lying pockets remain waterlogged and electricity restoration is still under way in parts of the city.
  • The city logged about 251.4–251.6 mm of rain in 24 hours, its heaviest single-day total in nearly four decades, and at least 10 people died, most from electrocution.
  • The IMD expects light to moderate rainfall in south Bengal through September 28, with a fresh Bay of Bengal low forming on September 25 and isolated heavy rain possible on September 27 in select districts.
  • Municipal teams are pumping out water and clearing drains, police have ordered removal of exposed wiring in coordination with CESC, and the state announced Rs 2 lakh ex-gratia and job assurances for victims’ families.
  • Metro, suburban rail and more than 90 flights were disrupted and many Durga Puja pandals and businesses were damaged, though festival preparations are resuming as waters recede.
