Kolkata Port Posts 27.6% Cargo Growth in April-May

Diversification into new cargo categories at Haldia Dock Complex underpinned the port’s robust start to FY26.

Overview

  • The port moved 11.252 million metric tonnes of cargo in April-May 2025, compared with 8.821 million in the same period a year earlier.
  • Haldia Dock Complex accounted for 8.139 million tonnes and the Kolkata Dock System for 3.113 million tonnes, reflecting year-on-year increases of 27.45% and 27.84% respectively.
  • Haldia introduced handling of thermal coal, raw petroleum coke and 29,000 tonnes of iron and steel, and Kolkata Dock System reported first-time volumes in coking coal, timber and foodgrains.
  • Container traffic rose 31.23% to 153,037 TEUs, driven by a 76.18% surge at Haldia and 24% growth at Kolkata Dock System.
  • The port delivered these gains despite global geopolitical tensions, highlighting its operational resilience and adaptability.
