Overview

  • Order prohibits assemblies of five or more people in parts of Harish Mukherjee Road, Kalighat, and Alipore from June 24 to August 22 under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita.
  • The ban forbids unlawful gatherings, carrying of lathis or other lethal weapons, and any acts likely to cause a breach of peace.
  • Notifications issued on June 22 followed the June 20 detention of state BJP president Sukanta Majumdar and a London-based doctor after their roadside meeting in Bhavanipur.
  • The BJP has accused authorities of targeting the doctor over his March confrontation with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee at Oxford’s Kellogg College.
  • Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Trinamool Congress MP Abhishek Banerjee both reside within the Kalighat jurisdiction covered by the prohibitory orders.
