Kolkata PMLA Court Reserves Order on ED Custody Bid for Minister Chandranath Sinha

The court set September 23 for its ruling after hearing the Enforcement Directorate’s plea for seven days of custodial interrogation.

Overview

  • Judge Suvendu Saha said the order will be delivered at 2 pm on Tuesday following arguments that ran for more than two hours.
  • ED sought a week’s custody, alleging Sinha is influential, has not cooperated with investigators, and that the agency now has incriminating material.
  • The judge questioned ED on why it delayed summons and filings despite earlier clues, asking why the agency “was dormant” before moving for custody.
  • A sixth supplementary chargesheet alleges fictitious transactions of Rs 12.73 crore and Rs 1.18 crore in phased cash deposits in a joint account from 2016 to 2019.
  • Sinha surrendered on September 6 and received interim bail on a Rs 10,000 bond, after a March 2024 ED raid recovered Rs 41 lakh from his residence.
