Kolkata Metro Sets September Ridership Record as Puja Crowds Trigger Special Carnival Trains

Recent expansions with wider app ticketing helped the system handle peak Puja travel.

  • Metro Railway will run six special late-night trains on Sunday for the Red Road Puja Carnival, operating on both the Blue and Green Lines at 20-minute intervals after regular services.
  • The network carried more than 2.25 crore passengers in September, the highest monthly total in Kolkata Metro’s history.
  • From Panchami to Dashami, 46.56 lakh riders used the Metro, with an all-time single-day high of 9.82 lakh recorded on Panchami.
  • The Blue Line handled most festive travel, while Kalighat led station footfall with over 4.06 lakh passengers, followed by Dum Dum and Sovabazar-Sutanuti, and Sealdah topped the Green Line.
  • More than 5.01 lakh tickets were booked via the Aamar Kolkata Metro app during the Puja days as 18,498 discounted Smart Cards were issued and about 1.59 lakh revalidated, with post-festival operations briefly trimmed to 236 Blue Line services on Ekadashi.
