Kolkata Metro Sets Ridership Records, Adds Late-Night Trains for Puja Carnival

Heavy use of digital tickets with smart cards eased queues during the Puja rush.

Overview

  • Metro Railway confirmed more than 2.25 crore passengers in September 2025, its highest monthly total to date.
  • Between Panchami and Dashami (September 27–October 2), the system carried a record 46.56 lakh riders, including an all-time single-day high of 9.82 lakh on Panchami.
  • Six special late-night trains will operate on Sunday for the Red Road Puja Carnival, with three in each direction on the Blue and Green Lines at 20-minute intervals after regular services.
  • App-based booking crossed 5.01 lakh during the festival window, with 18,498 new smart cards issued at a reduced price and 1.59 lakh cards revalidated.
  • The Blue Line handled the bulk of Puja demand, while Kalighat, Dumdum and Sovabazar-Sutanuti recorded the highest station footfalls; regular schedules resumed on October 3 with fewer Blue Line runs than usual.
