Kolkata Metro Opens Full East–West Link, Sets Aug. 25 Start for Airport and Orange Services

Timetables introduce frequent runs with the Hooghly river tunnel entering daily operations.

Overview

  • After the Aug. 22 inauguration by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the East–West corridor from Howrah Maidan to Salt Lake Sector V is fully open with 186 weekday services at roughly 8-minute intervals, with first trains at 06:30/06:32 and last at 21:45/21:47.
  • Weekday operations on the Yellow Line between Noapara and Jai Hind Bimanbandar begin Aug. 25 with 120 trains every 10–15 minutes, with first departures at 07:58 and last at 20:00.
  • Weekday operations on the Orange Line between Kavi Subhash and Beleghata also begin Aug. 25 with 60 trains about every 25 minutes, with first departures at 08:00 and last at 20:05.
  • Across the three corridors, metro authorities planned a total of 366 daily services.
  • The joined network includes a 520-metre tunnel beneath the Hooghly and provides major time savings, including Sealdah to Esplanade reduced to about 11 minutes.
