Kolkata Metro Opens East–West Link, Sets Aug. 25 Start for Airport and Orange Services

Overview

  • Revenue service on the full East–West (Green) corridor began on Aug. 22 after a virtual flag‑off, with 186 weekday trains and peak headways of about eight minutes and an 11‑minute HowrahSealdah ride.
  • The Noapara–Jai Hind Bimanbandar airport link on the Yellow Line is scheduled to start commercial operations on Aug. 25 with 120 weekday services and 10–15 minute frequencies, cutting Esplanade–airport trips to roughly 30 minutes.
  • The Orange Line stretch between Hemanta Mukhopadhyay (Ruby) and Beleghata is slated to open for commercial runs on Aug. 25 with 60 weekday services operating about every 25 minutes.
  • The three additions provide 366 more daily services and lift the network’s carrying capacity to approximately 9.15 lakh passengers, easing waits and reducing crowding.
  • Published fares include Rs 20 for HowrahSealdah, Rs 50 for Howrah–Airport, and up to Rs 70 from the Airport to Sector V, with a unified smart card and upgraded station amenities in place.
