Overview
- Metro Railway Kolkata announced on July 22–23 that from July 27 trains on the Blue (Garia–Dakshineswar) and Green (Howrah Maidan–Salt Lake Sector V) lines will start at 6:00 am and run until 10:30 pm on an experimental basis.
- Weekday service frequency will rise to reduce wait times, with Blue Line trips increasing from 260 to 272 per day and Green Line trips rising from 228 to 236 per day.
- Sunday operations will run continuously from 9:00 am to 10:30 pm on both corridors and will see modest increases in the number of services.
- Metro officials say the change may be withdrawn if patronage is insufficient and warn the move raises operating costs while highlighting the need for better last-mile transport and stronger security measures for late-night passengers, especially women.
- Officials also indicated possible future suburban extensions to places such as Barasat and Barrackpore, a development that could widen access for shift workers, students and late‑evening commuters.
