Kolkata Flooded by Torrential Rain as Bay System Forms, IMD Sees Likely Depression by Sept 26

Authorities issued yellow and orange alerts across West Bengal and Odisha, urging fishermen to stay off rough seas.

Overview

  • Overnight downpours paralysed Kolkata with severe waterlogging; KMC gauges showed Garia 332 mm and Jodhpur Park 285 mm as flights faced delays and power and traffic disruptions were reported.
  • The IMD says a low-pressure area over the northeast Bay of Bengal is driving persistent rain across South Bengal, with mixed yellow and orange alerts in place through September 26.
  • The agency forecasts another low forming around September 25 that could strengthen into a depression on September 26 and potentially cross the South Odisha–North Andhra coast around September 27.
  • Odisha districts remain on high rain watch with orange alerts for Keonjhar and Mayurbhanj, squally coastal winds of 40–50 kmph forecast, and heavy totals already recorded in Koraput, Sambalpur and other sites.
  • Separate yellow alerts cover Mumbai, Thane and Palghar for thunderstorms and heavy showers, with brief suburban rail delays reported and the possibility of renewed heavier spells later in the week.
