Kolkata Faces Showers During Core Durga Puja Days

Forecast agencies say migrating western disturbances with a Bay of Bengal circulation could bring rain and gusty storms that may disrupt outdoor Puja events and travel.

Overview

  • The Regional Meteorological Centre, Kolkata, and the India Meteorological Department forecast light to moderate rain or thundershowers in Kolkata and several south Bengal districts between October 15 and 17, covering key Durga Puja days.
  • The IMD has issued yellow alerts for thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds in parts of southern India through October 11–14, and forecasts scattered showers across eastern and northeastern states from October 11–16.
  • Pakistan’s Meteorological Department and Punjab PDMA warn a westerly wave will bring rain, strong winds, thunderstorms and isolated hail to upper and central Pakistan through about October 14–15, with local authorities urged to prepare.
  • Agencies stress that the southwest monsoon is withdrawing but migrating systems such as western disturbances and a potential low over the southeast Bay of Bengal can still trigger episodic rainfall and short-term disruption.
  • Forecasters expect mainly dry conditions to return to south Bengal around October 20–22, and they advise residents and event organisers to monitor updates and brace for localized impacts to outdoor pandals, travel and weak structures.
