Overview

• A 66-year-old woman, Srabanti Debi, died after an electric shock in front of her shop on Behala-Sarsuna Road in Kolkata.
• Eyewitnesses said she stood in lingering rainwater to open her shop and came into contact with a naked wire submerged under the water.
• A CESC official, after inspecting the spot, said the live wire was connected to a light fitted to the shop’s tin shade.
• Local residents alerted police and CESC, and Debi was taken to Vidyasagar Hospital where she was declared dead.
• The death raises the toll to 11 since Tuesday, as the Calcutta High Court seeks reports from CESC and the KMC, the chief minister blames CESC for infrastructure lapses, and ex-gratia payments of Rs 5 lakh from CESC and Rs 2 lakh from the state remain on offer.
