Kolkata Dips to 11°C as Cold Spell Grips West Bengal

IMD projects a modest warming in south Bengal from Friday as fog persists statewide.

  • Kolkata logged 11°C on December 31, the season’s lowest and 2.8°C below normal, according to the IMD.
  • Minimum temperatures stayed below 10°C in several locations, including Sriniketan at 6.5°C, Kalyani 7°C, Bardhaman 8°C, Bankura 8°C, Panagarh 9.2°C and Kalaikunda 9.4°C.
  • Darjeeling fell to 3.4°C, with a forecast of light rain or snowfall in the upper reaches over the next three days.
  • The Met office warns of dense fog in parts of north Bengal with visibility of 50–199 metres, alongside light to moderate fog across the state through the next four mornings.
  • The chill is likely to persist for about a week in the sub-Himalayan districts, while south Bengal night temperatures may rise by 2–3°C from Friday.
