Kolkata Court Denies ED Custody of Chandranath Sinha as Questioning Enters Second Day

Citing investigative delay, the judge limited questioning to daytime appearances at the ED office on September 25–26.

Overview

  • Sinha appeared before ED officers for a second straight day on September 26 and was questioned for hours about his dealings, savings and investments.
  • The special PMLA court rejected a seven-day custody plea, kept his interim bail in place and capped interrogation to office hours, with reporting at 11 a.m. and no questioning after 5 p.m.
  • The ED’s sixth supplementary PMLA complaint alleges Rs 1.18 crore in phased cash deposits into a joint account held by Sinha and his wife between January 2016 and November 2019.
  • Investigators earlier seized about Rs 41–42 lakh from Sinha’s Bolpur residence in March 2024, which the agency says he failed to satisfactorily explain.
  • The case stems from alleged cash-for-school-jobs practices during 2014–2021 under a probe ordered by the Calcutta High Court in 2022, with trial proceedings now underway in the Alipore court.
