Kojima Says He Was Never Told of Reported 1999 Wachowski Pitch for a Matrix Game

His post contradicts a former Konami executive’s account that the Wachowskis sought him in 1999 before management rejected the idea.

Overview

  • Posting on X, Hideo Kojima said he learned only this week of claims that the Wachowskis asked for him to make a Matrix game in 1999 and that no one at Konami ever informed him at the time.
  • Kojima recounted meeting the filmmakers during the movie’s Japan promotion but said he arrived after their meeting with Konami executive Kazumi Kitaue and heard no offer discussed.
  • Time Extension’s earlier report cited former Konami VP Christopher Bergstresser, who says the Wachowskis visited HQ with concept artist Geoff Darrow and that Kitaue immediately refused the request to keep Kojima focused on Metal Gear Solid 2.
  • Kojima acknowledged he was extremely busy with MGS2 in 1999 yet added that, had he known of the approach, there might have been a way to make it work; an anonymous ex‑Konami staffer previously claimed Kojima showed interest, a point now in dispute.
  • Kojima’s development diary notes a Wachowski meeting on August 25, 1999, while the Matrix license ultimately went to Shiny Entertainment, which released Enter the Matrix in 2003 and The Matrix: Path of Neo in 2005.
